General reasons of Hard Disk Drive Failure

In 21st century every home has Computers, Portable Computers and Laptops. Very often we face issues with Hard Disk Drive Failure and we should identify the issue or reason for “Hard Disk Drive” (HDD) failure or crash very carefully. Identifying the breakdown or damage of Hard disk drive is very important as if we try to fail identify the exact reason we may lead in to major data loss or important files in it.

General reasons of Hard Disk Drive Failure

General reasons of Hard Disk Drive Failure

There are “n” number of data loss recovery software’s are available but before using that we need to identify what exactly made Hard disk drive (HDD) not detecting or not booting  O.S. Here, I am listing the some of the general reasons of hard disk failures and how to avoid using best practices.

What causes a hard drive to fail?

Here are the three reasons why do hard drives fail,

  1. Breakdown of Hard drive failure: Cabinets are not enough to protect the hard disk. We also need to take extra care to protect the Hard disk from physical damages.

Common Causes of Physical damages in Hard disk:

  • Overheating of Hard disk.
  •  Moisture around or Water drop on Hard disk.
  •  Improper electric earthling in power point.
  •  Lot of dust on HDD.
  •  CPU covered by any type of cover or clothe or improper ventilation.
  •  Keeping CPU ON for long time. (day above)
  •  High Electric voltage or loose connection on Hard disk.

Best practice to avoid Physical Hard disk break down:

  • At least once in a month clean the dust inside the CPU: Small power blowers are recommended.
  • Do not cover CPU with any type cover or cloths.
  • Make sure proper ventilation around the CPU.
  • Proper electrical earthling or Separate earthling for computer is recommended.
  • Do shake the CPU or Laptop when it’s ON as running Hard disk result in to platter, Hard disk head damage.
  • Make sure ventilator fans are running inside the CPU.
  1. Non-Physical Break downs: Even though some time Hard Disk is well protected and followed best practices provided above chances are there for non-physical damages. However, Non-Physical damages are safe as there are many ways to recover the data. There are many reasons why hard disk gets corrupt or damage sensibly and reasons are like below.

Common Causes of Non- Physical damages in Hard disk:

  • Virus function may go ahead make hard disk invisible or hide data inside the hard disk.
  • Placing the file structure in wrong format.
  • Corrupted files system or self-wreak Data result of your hard drive accidentally trying writing the data regularly.
  • Encrypting the data in Hard disk.
  • Files system of hard disk drive (FAT16, 32, NTFS etc)
  • Improper primary and secondary partition created.

Best practice to avoid Physical Hard disk break down:

  • Use updated Antivirus. (if its freeware make sure you update virus definition regularly)
  • Follow the hierarchical file system while placing data in to hard disk.
  • Do not use any (16, 32, 64 bit) encryption for data unless you know how to decrypt it well.
  • Choose proper files system based on operating system. (FAT16, 32, NTFS etc)
  • Create the proper partitions (Primary and Secondary) Avoid loading data in single partition.
  1. Breakdown in Hard disk parts: We have one more cause of hard disk failure, even though hard disk is well protected from physical and non-physical damages hard disk is made up of many parts like Plates, Platters and Platter head, Chromium oxide layer etc and these will without doubt fail very often.

Common Causes or Symptoms of Hard disk parts failures:

  • Loose connection of Hard Disk Drive inside CPU, Keeping CPU or Laptop in wrong position when it’s ON, Very old Hard disk.

Best practice to avoid Physical Hard disk break down:

Essentially there are no precaution to avoid hard disk parts break downs but we can follow simple rules to keep hard disk health in good condition like make sure hard disk is firmly placed inside CPU, do not keep CPU or Laptop in vertical or in awkward positions as Hard disk needs to be in parallel position. Check very often hard disk spinning sound and make sure there are no clicking, interrupted sound.
